Adam Afriyie's grand second home is a minute's walk from Parliament but the shadow science minister refuses to be photographed with the Commons in the background because, he admits sheepishly, "its current image is of politicians on the take and that's not me". Nor will the self-made millionaire, said to be worth up to £100million, pose for our snapper inside his cavernous living room because he does not want to look "too posh" or "too Establishment".
Such attempts to control his image are not unexpected. Afriyie, 45, is an extremely private man who never talks about his personal life, hitherto declining even to explain what it was like to be the first - and still only - black Conservative MP.
